Keep on Dreaming – Final Blog

(Originally written 26 September 2016 after having returned from California)

I was at a Fast Food Outlet at Minneapolis International Airport on my way from the West Coast of the USA to Denmark, while I met a young woman working her shift.

“Do you like your job?” I asked in a very Western Way, which I tried to do while in India, but was sadly disappointed when doing so. Like and Job didn’t fit together in that instance, while I probably should have asked, “Isn’t it great having a job, or Nice place to work, you are lucky”.

This young woman was happy with her job, because it gave her the opportunity to meet new people while doing so.

Next question: “Do you have a passport?”

The answer was “No”, but she wanted to get one eventually.

Next question: “If you had a passport, and the money to travel, where would you go?”

She thought a bit before answering. “To the jungle”, she said.

I answered a bit facetious: “Los Angeles, perhaps?”

“No, the rain forest”, she replied without blinking. “Or better yet, Japan”.

Hmm. They did have those Snow Monkeys in Japan, I thought.

“Keep your dreams alive, save your money, and go” – That was my advice. I told her how I was living in Denmark, speaking the language on a daily basis, and so on.

She then asked: “How long before you were fluent?”

Funny thing, but I don’t even consider myself fluent today, even though 25 years have gone by.

My reply: “Youth and interest play a bit part in learning anything new. Put your mind to it, and you can learn anything!”

Her face beamed with the expression of joy and wonderment. I imagined that I made a difference in her dreams, and that she too would take up my challenge to someday journey outside of USA’s borders, and experience something different and foreign.

I ended with telling her, that a number of Danes could travel to the usual tourist destinations, and feel safe knowing that someone there could speak Danish, and that the signs at restaurants and hotels, would be in Danish as well.

I thought that Japan was a good choice. Let yourself experience something so foreign, that you might just lose yourself, or get yourself lost in all of that foreignness. Try something different for a change, and see how the rest of the world lives.

My path led me away from that Fast Food Counter and onward to the next Gate and the next Plane……………

Wonder what ever happened to Wonder Dog? Or what about Linda? Those were things that I used early on, but disappeared over time.

As an added treat, here is a rare photo of Wonder Dog, enjoying his first ever Ice Cream Sandwich Cookie in Yosemite National Park

Seeing as how he is a teenager and all, and not always sure about being my son, when I act other than he expects me to, I have not included his photo in this blog. This being the last one, however, I felt that he deserved at least a short mention, as well as receiving my thanks for a great trip, and his much appreciated photographic talents!

Linda has faded into the shadows of Northern Michigan, which is how all former “loves” tend to be, with them liking that distinction, or not?

I thought of continuing this blog with any number of additional photos, but that would only prolong its existence.

For all of you who shared my trip, I extend an appreciation for your reads and likes along the way.  I felt that this was a fitting point in time to end this blog, so as to remain credible within the confines of my 3-week trip last year.

Happy Traveling……Down your own Inner Ear…….

Meanwhile, Back in Denmark.

You see how the power of blogging, allows me to write about Denmark, while I am still stuck in Yosemite National Park in California, which is sometimes called Viborg!

Autumn days with the usual cold, foggy type of weather has descended upon us. Today, if you were really lucky, not like me, the sun shone a few places, usually within my sight, just too far away to enjoy.

I went to the local grocery store, taking Wonder Dog with me. He only needs to see me swing my keys in the air, which means that we are going Drive-Drive, instead of Walk-Walk. No, I don’t just use Baby Talk with him, just with you!

I kept thinking the camera on my telephone needed cleaning, but I’m pretty sure it is this Country that is lacking clarity.

Wonder Dog decided to appear in one, or two of the photos, along with some really foreign stuff, like an info board telling about this Burial Mound (that roundish-looking clump of grass in the background). If you really squeezed your eyes together, you’d see the sun shining in the background, but even I doubt that I saw anything like that, after seeing the above photos myself?

If your imagination is in working order, you might just see a bit of sunlight in the direction, that Wonder Dog is looking, but don’t worry if no one else believes you, as people have told me that I’m filled with hooey for many years now!

I’ve tried polishing my telephone camera, and blowing my steamy breath to help it as well, but I’m afraid that you’ll just have to accept Denmark as being rather fog shrouded and mysterious instead.

We even have people dressed in Clown Costumes, terrorizing the locals and causing wonder and anger about the Country that spawned such behavior. I forget which Country that is, and it is better than I change the subject once again!

8 degrees Celsius has been the high temperature today, which is 46 degrees Fahrenheit for the rest of the civilized world.

That is all for today from Viborg, or a place that resembles Viborg, but definitely not Yosemite National Park…

Description of Burial Mound, called Oddershøj.(translated using Google Translate, plus some additional work by me)

Oddershøj is thought to be a burial mound from the Bronze Age.
The burial mound's size and location suggest that the mound has been the
setting of a distinguished person's funeral. Urns were found inserted
on the sides of the hill. The mound is built up of grass turf, and
unlike similar mounds, the sides of this one are very well preserved.
Avoid traffic and wear on the mound and help to protect it for the future.

Stuck in the Wrong Gear

Some people might just say that this blog is just that?

What happened to Wonder Dog?

Why is Los Angeles so important, even though it is the City that you love to hate?

What really happened with Linda?

You see, a site like mine is a natural magnet for questions like those. I think that I must be stuck in the wrong gear, otherwise we would know just where this blog was going! It might just be those darn mosquito bites that have been gnawing away at me, or those incessant dreams that remarkably have been in English over the last 2 weeks, or so!

Well, Wonder Dog is alive and well, even though he wouldn’t understand all of the concern over him.

Here he is in one of his lighter moments, trying to convince himself that the ball on the ground is the right one to play with?

He was with me on the trip down my Inner Ear, but chose to step out of the limelight for a while to let me go on and on about Linda, and why Los Angeles was not worth taking all of those pictures anyway.

About those mosquito bites, well they continue to itch and cause me distress. You might know how it is, standing there at the pharmacy, perusing the 101 different cures for mosquito bites, then your mind starts to wonder about Linda and those good times together with her in Los Angeles, and before you know it, you are back at the off-leash area, choosing the right ball to throw for your dog!

I feel like life goes round in circles, but then I am stuck in the wrong gear, you know…….

Where Is The Travel Fairy?

We’ve started the packing stage, Wonder Dog and I. We’ve put our disagreements aside for a while in order to get through this most difficult of all phases.

I’ve convinced myself that there exists a Travel Fairy, who helps out in instances such as these, when everything that is anything exists on the floors, the tabletops and in my mind.

All thoughts of glory, the wonders of traveling and the excitement of experiencing new things have been lost in the mess that surrounds me.

What was I thinking of, when I decided to take this trip?

Whose fault is it?

How in the world can I make heads of tails of this mess?

Wonder Dog just relaxes on the floor, waiting for the next meal, or toss of his squeaky football.

Does he look worried? I think not.

You’d think that man’s best friend would help his owner out in this instance. Point his paw in the right direction, or call the Travel Fairy, and ask for her help!

“Just the essentials? Aced that one!”, he said before he fell back asleep…….

Dog Logic – Travel Calculations

OK. When we are traveling to Los Angeles, we leave at 10am and arrive at 8pm on the same day.

Wonder Dog stretches and wags his tail. A flight time of only 10 hours seemed reasonable to him.

But….

His tail stopped wagging. But was not an option. 10 hours is 10 hours.

“Well, you see-” I start off by saying, but Wonder Dog has left the room.

No matter. I’ll just practice my “But” a bit more, then I’ll try it on him later.

But. There are 9 time zones between Denmark and California, which means that we need to subtract that from the actual flying time.

But. Flying time is 14 hours and 43 minutes, with 6 hours at various airports.

But 14.43+6=20.43 – 9= 11.43 hours. Give or take an hour or two depending on the rotation of the Earth, and the, what?

Wonder Dog has poked his head into the room once again.

“Dog Logic tells him that 11 hours and 43 minutes is not the same as 10 hours.”

Hmm. On this site: http://www.timeanddate.com/time/travel.html

It’s possible to calculate the time difference between 2 points on the planet.

travel duration

“All well and good hints Wonder Dog, but it still says 9 hours 40 minutes.”

“When do I get to lift my leg and relieve myself on the seat?”

Well, you don’t. You see…

Wonder Dog has left the room again, leaving me to ponder those missing minutes, almost like the gaps on the Watergate Tapes. The Watergate what? Hmm.

My age is beginning to show again. That might just be a good excuse to explain my lacking minutes, and the lack of Dog Logic on my part.

“Dog Logic – the ability to think in a rational way, not necessarily in the same way that humans do. Using Dog Logic can be thought of using the following equation:

2+2=4, but only if 2=food, and 2=like, which means that 4=happiness.

1.Food, 2.Walk, 3. Sleep, 4.Play – are all essential parts of Dog Logic.

I guess, I’ll just have to figure out a plausible argument, before I attempt to explain the mechanics of airline travel to one, who exists solely on Dog Logic.

“Pull up your food dish” he seems to say, crossing his paws and leaning back into his box, “we’ve got a long night ahead of us, teaching you Dog Logic”.

A long night indeed. I only hope he lets me out in the yard for a break later on…….

The Validity of Writing a Travel Blog

Now that I’ve started writing this Travel Blog, there have been issues that concern the validity of such an undertaking.

Are my sources reliable? Am I projecting the correct image? Is this blog of any value at all, or just the purest form of Time Killing?

I guess, it’s up to the individual to answer those questions. My aim is just to express the things in and around me while I kill 3 weeks somewhere else on this planet, then where I otherwise kill time. Wonder Dog is satisfied being with me, but then that is the purpose of having a dog, companionship. My wife will remain in Denmark, keeping the home fires burning, not reading my blogs like normal, which is no more than I would have expected her to do!

I’ve been touching on the subjects concerning Trip Preparation and Trip Anticipation for the most, but those subjects are mine and mine alone, as I don’t normally subscribe to other blogs gleaning ideas from those blog sites. I’m certain that others, who do this on a daily basis, are getting a good laugh from my attempts at jump in on the genre of Travel Blogging, but then it is only down my Inner Ear, and not a lot of people write about that, do they?

Wonder Dog seems to have an itch, which keeps waking him up, so I guess I’d better get moving on this day, and help us both to get the necessary exercise before the Great White Bird Alights in a few weeks!

God Rejse!

Happy Traveling!
